Printed Textiles Area Health and Safety Policy
INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH AND SAFETY
PRINTED TEXTILES:
Many of the processes involved in the manufacture and designing of Textiles can be potentially hazardous. There are risks to your health and well being from machinery you may well be using and there can be health risks from some of the dyes and chemicals etc.used in various processes whilst engaged in print and dye related activities. In view of this we wish to draw your attention to potential health risks and dangers involved, when working in certain areas and when using certain processes and equipment. In order to run the centre as safely and efficiently as possible we have to impose certain ground rules which we expect every user to adhere to:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
You must attend formal workshops sessions as they form the basis for health and safety induction as well as practical engagement and right to open access. It must be remembered that all users have an individual and collective responsibility to ensure that the areas are maintained as a safe working environment for all. It is also worth remembering that failure to comply with the ground rules can result in denied access for those who chose to ignore them. During the workshop induction you are asked to indicate any health issues e.g. asthmatic conditions, skin allergies etc. which need to be brought to the attention of the Technical Instructor running the session. This will help in giving guidelines on engagement in the activities taking place.
WORKSHOP AREAS:
As previously mentioned there can be health risks attached to some of the dyes and chemicals used in these areas. There will be occasions when you will be required to wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and masks. The areas are generally very well ventilated and there is a good level of extraction room OC43 which is our main area associated with mixing dyes and pigments. Clean up as asked and always leave an area clean and tidy prior to departure, this applies to programmed workshops and open access. Think of others using the facility, wash your screens and squeegees and return them to the designated areas. Shelf storage is available for those items which need to be kept and reused. Label all your containers and any leftover print pastes/dyes you need to keep. Never leave dyes or pigments on print tables beyond the time of usage, as these can easily be knocked over and spilled, which in turn can seriously affect the quality of other users work. Clean up any spillages immediately as this can also have an adverse effect on others using the same space.
PLEASE ABIDE BY THESE RULES WHEN USING THE AREAS, AND REMEMBER THE LESS MESS YOU MAKE, THE LESS MESS YOU HAVE TO CLEAN UP AFTERWARDS. THE MORE IN CONTROL YOU ARE THE LESS OUT OF CONTROL WE ALL BECOME!
